What is an egg donation?

Oocyte donation is an assisted reproduction technique applied in cases of premature ovarian failure (due to early menopause, chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy treatment or other reasons), menopause, low oocyte quality or low ovarian reserve. In all these cases it is not possible to obtain an appropriate number of good quality oocytes or gestation with the woman’s own eggs is not recommended due to essentially genetic reasons. The only requirement for being a recipient of donor oocytes is to have a functional uterus.

First appointment: In this first consultation, the problem is discussed and after a medical assessment, the necessary tests for both members of the couple are requested. These tests are essential to determine the cause of the infertility and to identify the most appropriate technique for each couple. These tests are essential to determine the cause of the infertility and to identify the most appropriate technique for each couple.

What does it entail?

First step

DONOR SELECTION
The donor will be selected by the Clinic, with the aim of finding the person with the greatest phenotypic and immunologic similarity to the recipient. The donation process requires a previous study to ensure a suitable donor is assigned. Donation is always anonymous and confidential, and hence donor and recipient cannot know each other or meet.

Second step

ENDOMETRIAL STIMULATION
Just like the donor, the patient receives medication to prepare her uterus in order to maximise the embryo implantation probabilities. The treatment is simple and it does not require many visits to the medical centre.

Third step

BLASTOCYST CULTURE – TRANSFER
Just like in the In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) process, the donor egg is fertilised with the sperm sample in the laboratory. Donor sperm or partner sperm can be used. After 5 days, the pre-embryos are examined to confirm if they have developed into a blastocyst and the intrauterine transfer of the best embryo is performed.

Fourth step

PREGNANCY TEST
We will let you know the best date to have a blood pregnancy test, which tends to be 8 days after the transfer. You will be able to lead a normal life during that time, although high-intensity activities are not recommended.

Our success rates

Egg donation is an In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) procedure, but with a donor egg. At Invitam, the success rate for this technique involving oocyte donation has a high probability of becoming a pregnancy.
